Advantages of polypharmaceutical herbal Cannabis compared to single-ingredient, synthetic tetrahydrocannabinol

چکیده

Introduction In the United States, marijuana (Cannabis sativa, possibly also Cannabis indica and Cannabis afghanica) is classified by the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) as a prohibited Schedule I drug ("no currently accepted medical use"). As a substitute for marijuana, the DEA approved dronabinol (Marinol®). Dronabinol is synthetic delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (∆-THC). It is formulated in a capsule, designed for oral administration. Because ∆-THC is the primary psychoactive ingredient in both Dronabinol and marijuana, the DEA considers Dronabinol equal to marijuana in effectiveness, for the treatment of nausea, vomiting, and anorexia. But Dronabinol and marijuana are not equal, according to many reports (Grinspoon & Bakalar 1997). Many patients report that marijuana has better therapeutic activity than Dronabinol, and that marijuana has less side effects than Dronabinol. Dronabinol often causes psychological “overdose” reactions, symptoms such as dysphoria, depersonalization, anxiety, panic reactions, and paranoia.

Chemical Cannabis; the New Trend of Addiction in Iran

Synthetic cannabinoids (SC) are a heterogeneous group of substances with a high affinity for cannabinoid receptors. Unlike Δ9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), synthetic cannabinoids are incredibly potent, highly productive, have more affinity for the Cannabinoid receptor type 1 (CB1), and Cannabinoid receptor type 2 (CB2), and are designed to accelerate the effects of tetrahydrocannabinol. Also, the...

Cannabinoid-related agents in the treatment of anxiety disorders: current knowledge and future perspectives.

Rich evidence has shown that cannabis products exert a broad gamut of effects on emotional regulation. The main psychoactive ingredient of hemp, Δ9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), and its synthetic cannabinoid analogs have been reported to either attenuate or exacerbate anxiety and fear-related behaviors in humans and experimental animals. The heterogeneity of cannabis-induced psychological outcome...

"Spice" and "K2" herbal highs: a case series and systematic review of the clinical effects and biopsychosocial implications of synthetic cannabinoid use in humans.

Cannabis, the most commonly used illicit substance, exerts its primary psychoactive effect via delta-9 tetrahydrocannabinol (Δ(9) -THC) agonism of cannabinoid receptor type 1 (CB1). Some users develop a cannabis use disorder and physical dependence manifested by withdrawal symptoms during abstinence. Hence, there is growing public health concern about increasing use of a new generation of synth...

AIM The objective of this meta-analysis is to assess the data regarding changes in herbal cannabis potency over time (from 1970 to 2009). METHODS Systematic searches of 17 electronic scientific databases identified studies on this topic, within which 21 case series studies satisfied our inclusion criteria of reporting the mean tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) value per number of samples per year. N...
